With food prices soaring, supply chains faltering, and processed foods becoming the norm, more families are turning to sustainable, home-based solutions. In uncertain times, backyard chickens provide fresh eggs, natural fertilizer, pest control—and a surprising amount of joy. Let us help you create a backyard flock that brings real security, satisfaction, and self-sufficiency to your life.
Your birds will provide eggs which can be used for food. The eggs are also a great source of nutrition as they contain all the essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals to maintain good health. Additionally, they are higher in Omega 3 fatty acids and contain higher levels of beta carotene. Eggs produced by backyard chickens are often more flavorful than eggs from store-bought birds, and they usually have a more vibrant yellow or orange yolk.
Backyard chickens can also serve as a natural form of pest control. From flies to rats and other rodents, a backyard flock of chickens can keep the little critters away from the property. Additionally, the manure can be used as natural fertilizer for gardens and farmlands. The chickens' droppings have a high nutrient content and can be used to increase crop yields naturally.
The maintenance cost of owning a flock of backyard chickens is also very low. Chickens require a coop, some food, and water, but not much else. They are also quite easy to care for, requiring very little in terms of day-to-day maintenance. Keeping a small flock of chickens requires the right equipment and tools for proper care and maintenance. First and foremost, you will need a coop or housing for your chickens. The coop should be large enough to accommodate the chickens and have easy access for cleaning and egg collection. It should also be constructed using materials that are safe and durable enough to protect your chickens from the elements and predators.
Once your chicken housing is set up, there are a few key items you'll need to keep your flock healthy, clean, and comfortable. First, a good-quality feeder and waterer are essential. Feeders can be gravity-fed or hanging styles, and should be sturdy and easy to refill. Your water system should deliver fresh, clean water consistently—hydration is critical to chicken health.
Next, you’ll want to lay down proper bedding such as straw, wood shavings, or hay. Bedding helps insulate the coop, keeps your chickens comfortable, and absorbs moisture from droppings, which helps reduce odor and bacteria. To keep everything tidy and sanitary, basic cleaning tools like a shovel, rake, broom, and dustpan will go a long way in maintaining a safe environment for your birds.
The extraordinary benefits of a backyard chicken flock are numerous. Not only can you enjoy eggs and meat from your own flock, but you will also find companionship, entertainment, a connection to the past and present and a host of educational opportunities from raising your own chickens that cannot be underestimated. In addition, having chickens brings a sense of pride and accomplishment, a connection to nature and a chance to help sustain the environment by producing your own, sustainable supply of food. Amidst today's hectic, complicated lives, it's reassuring to know one can still participate in a basic, natural, organic way of life— Elemental Living.
